to backcountry touring and travel in avalanche terrain.

We include the curriculum of the AST 1 with the benefit of

two full days of instructor led ski touring in a local backcountry zone.

Our AST 1 + Intro to Backcountry takes place over two field days, along with an online course that must be completed prior to the field portion of the course.

This means we spend our field days in the snow, touring and working on our skills, instead of in a classroom.

While some operations offer one field day for the AST 1, we believe more is better.

Our AST 1 + Intro to Backcountry is the perfect course to introduce you to backcountry skiing in avalanche terrain.

We want you to feel well prepared for decision making in avalanche terrain after our course. We strive to provide the best entry-to-backcountry education out there.

Students must have their own touring equipment - Touring Skis, a Splitboard, or Snowshoes/Approach Skis with downhill equipment.

Students must have their own transceiver, probe, and shovel - Contact Us for rental availability

For more information on what to put in your pack, visit our AST 1 - Pack List

Intermediate skiing/riding ability is highly recommended - Some experience in deep snow conditions, and the ability to walk up to 5km over 500m of elevation gain/loss.

Lift Access is not part of this course. As a backcountry skiing/riding course, we strive to practice skills for backcountry skiing, starting in the parking lot by heading out of bounds.

Return Policy

A full refund, less processing fee, is available up to 21 days prior to course start date. Less than 21 days prior to course start date, a 50% refund is available.
